What's In My Toolbox?: Eden Grinshpan, Host of "Eden Eats" on The Cooking Channel

Nov162011

The Chef: Eden Grinshpan, host of Eden Eats on The Cooking Channel.

The Toolbox: My knife roll bag. As long as I have that then I feel prepared to take on any task in any kitchen. I keep all of the essentials in my roll bag, which is helpful since I travel so much on “Eden Eats.”

The Tools: My chef’s knife, serrated knife, sharpening steel, peeler, tongs, spatula, a fine grater, and tweezers.

The Sentimental Tool: My chef’s knife and I have an unbreakable bond. Before I went to culinary school I didn’t know that much about working in a kitchen, but afterwards I realized how important it was to work with a great knife and I never looked back. I also have a serious obsession with my yogurt strainer, Silpat, and Microplane grater. They are all essentials in my everyday life. I am obsessed with strained yogurt—it sounds weird but I love the thickness, consistency and the versatility of it. Obviously, Silpat for baking—it makes life so much easier and I don’t have to waste parchment paper. Last but not least, my Microplane grater. It cuts my prep time in half and allows me to throw healthy meals together quickly and easily.

Your Go-To Non-Kitchen Tool: I’ll use a pair of tweezers when I need to debone fish. But I always wash the tweezers thoroughly afterwards.;)

Your Holy Grail Tool?
: A blender. I went for so long without one when I moved into my apartment because a) I simply had no space for one since I lived in a small studio apartment and b) It was pricey so to make curries, soups and spreads that I had to get creative with the tools I already had that weren’t as efficient.

What A Psychologist Would Say About Your Toolbox
: I’m a survivor—I can adapt to any culinary emergency!

Have You Ever Used Food As A Tool?

I’ve used carrots to crush garlic, but I’ve bruised my hands far too many times doing this in an effort to impress people.

What Do You Do When You Step Away From The Stove? I perform, dance, sing, do the dishes and the laundry, clean, look up recipes…the question is…what don’t I do?

Anything Else To Say About The Tools In Your Life? Tools help me to express myself on a daily basis. There is not one day that passes that I don’t experiment with at least one dish in the kitchen. The possibilities, the techniques and the tools are endless. Bring it on!
