Tool of the Week: Electric Garlic Roaster

—Contest now closed—

Apr192010

First off, let me wish you a very happy National Garlic Day! Yes, today, April 19th, is the real deal. So go out and indulge, and if anyone gives you a hard time, just tell them you’re celebrating!

April is zipping by, and I have more garlic-related Tools than there are Weeks left in the month, and so because I also need to bend your ear, I’m offering a nice little bribe in the form of a Roasted Garlic Express from the Hannon Group. It’s a countertop electric roaster that promises to roast up to 3 medium bulbs of garlic in 27 minutes flat.

Before we get to that, here’s the deal. This week, I’m headed to the annual convention of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, an amalgam of chefs, food writers, marketing professionals, cooking teachers and others to attend seminars, mingle, gab, attend the trade show, listen to keynote speakers like Ruth Reichl, and, of course, eat.

It’s held in Portland, Oregon this year, and there will be thousands of chefs and culinary experts there. So here’s where I need your help.

If you had this many chefs at your disposal and could ask any chef any question about tools that are relevant to your life, what would you ask?

Go beyond the obvious. I’m not looking for “What’s your favorite knife?” or “If money was no object, what tool would you get?” If you could ask them ANYTHING in the world about tools, what would it be?

Go crazy. Knock yourself out. Because this contest is going to be decided on the creativity of the response, and not just picking a number out of the hat from Random.com.

Win one!

Win an Electric Garlic Roaster from the Hannon Group, a value of $34.99.

  • Cooks garlic in less than 30 minutes: half the time to cook in normal oven and without heating the kitchen.
  • Easy to use and easy to clean removable non-stick tray.
  • Automatically shuts off after 27 minutes
  • 600 watts

This is a shortened contest, since the convention ends this weekend. So give it your best shot.

To enter, leave a comment below by Saturday, April 24th, 11:59 EDT. This week, comment about this: You have any chef you want in the world in front of you. Who is it and what would you like to ask him/her about kitchen tools, yours or theirs?

chris swan Apr 19 2010

My question to all chefs is what is the best, most used tool that you think every home cooks should have?

As for my fav chef I keep changing, right now I guess Rachael Ray or Americas Test Kitchen chefs. I like people who cook with reasonable cuts of meat and make easy recipes that home cooks stand a chance of making that turn out good and don’t cost a fortune.

Have fun at the conference I bet it will be great!

Carol Harrity Apr 19 2010

I think the answer would be really good knifes first, then good pans.

debp Apr 19 2010

My question to all chefs:

“What is one question about kitchen tools you would ask another chef?”
(yes, very cheeky on my part indeed)

I would love to see what any accomplish chef would say just to see what their thought process is and how they think. If they deal with these tools everyday, it’ll be eye-opening to find out what they pay attention to.

And if he were available, I would definitely ask Keller. The guy is the chef of chefs and seems to already know everything. It would be amazing to find out how his brain actually ticks.
