Tool of the Week: Garlic Geese Storage Jar

—Contest now closed—

Apr152010

I’ve been settled in my new place for a couple of weeks now and my roommate generously gave me run of the kitchen. Good thing, because food that doesn’t contain hydrolized vegetable protein and hundreds of other unpronounceable ingredients hasn’t crossed the threshold of this house for years.

Everything’s put away and pretty much in its place, and if you’re like me, you add garlic to any savory recipe even if it doesn’t call for it.

So last weekend, I’m making a mac and cheese (with brie!) and mushroom recipe from Food Network Magazine, and I look around for the garlic bulb I bought a few days earlier and can’t find it.

Even in a kitchen I’m unfamiliar with, I can ALWAYS find the garlic. This time, not a chance. If it fell on the floor, then the 10-year-old arthritic, flatulent beagle that sounds like a truffle-sniffing boar whenever he scours the floor for dropped food bits would have already gotten it.

But to my knowledge, there’ve been no garlic-infused dog farts to be seen…or smelled. So I knew it was still around, but with roommate temporarily AWOL, I was out of luck. And the supermarket is now 8/10ths of a mile away instead of three blocks.

So in the same way that I sorrowfully consumed my unmashed potatoes when my Pastry Pal blender went missing, I nevertheless choked down the garlic-less mac and cheese. Good as it was, it was still missing something.

The next day, a goodie box from Enesco arrived, filled with garlic storage jars destined for the Tool of the Week. I’m not usually a knickknack kind of gal, but I love the way the garlic cloves on the jars and on a few other of the company’s products have been fashioned into geese.

And so one can be yours. Actually, four of you will win, because I’m keeping one so I’ll never be garlic-free again.

Win one!

Win an Enesco Garlic Storage Jar, a $15 value.

We have FOUR to give away, so your chances of scoring one are pretty good.

Not everyone might categorize this as “crazy”, but … turned to garlic powder. Shameful, I know.

Amber G Apr 15 2010

Hmm…once I road my bike to the store (because there was no car left at home) when it was drizzling to get garlic!

SoDucky Apr 15 2010

I don’t know about crazy. I keep garlic powder for such purposes, even though it is in no way the same.

What’s the craziest thing I’ve done when I discovered there was no garlic in the house?

I ran next door to my neighbors with nothing on but a robe and pink bunny slippers.

The few times I have found myself in this predicament, I either borrowed a few cloves from a neighbor or ran to the store to buy some mid recipe.

Marcia Apr 16 2010

Actually, I don’t have a “garlic-less” story because I have a jar of minced garlic in the refrig….I hope it is still good, I’ve never had to use it. Fresh garlic from the supermarket doesn’t stay fresh very long so this container would be a great addition to my kitchen.

Once I tried to mix other herbs and spices to come up with something as close as possible like Mrs. Salt brand does and I couldn’t. There is no substitute for one of the world’s best tastes GARLIC!!! Enjoy the GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL in central California!!!!!!!!! If youv’e never been, it’s a really good time!!

Deedles Apr 16 2010

I always have garlic powder on hand just in case.

Sharon Harmon Apr 16 2010

I used too much cayenne pepper! lol! :)

Denise B. Apr 16 2010

I would have to resort to garlic powder.

Tarah Apr 16 2010

I used garlic powder

Joannie Apr 16 2010

I once went out to my garden after dark to try to find some garlic that I could dig up to use. I might also add that this was in the winter!!!

Angela J Apr 16 2010

I use garlic powder

Deborah Wellenstein Apr 16 2010

That has never happened!

Kimberly L Apr 16 2010

One time while making shrimp scampi, I didn’t realize I was out of garlic before needing it , and didn’t have garlic powder either. So I decided to use garlic salt … bad, bad idea. Would not recommend it at all

Francine Apr 16 2010

Mine is a “where is the garlic?” story – my mother was visiting my brother at his first apartment & needed garlic for the dinner she was making. She looked everywhere, but couldn’t find it, so as a last resort, she looked in the cupboard under the sink. There, with the dishwashing liquid….garlic! Why there? In my mother’s kitchen, in the cupboard under the sink, was a little ledge that was perfect for storing…yup, you guessed it.. garlic. My brother’s cupboard didn’t have a ledge, but that was the only place he knew to store garlic!

Christine Apr 16 2010

I sauteed some leftover garlic peels from the fridge bin, didn’t work!

Tammy Klain Apr 16 2010

I dont have any stories cause my hubby is a garlicoholic..so we have a basket of garlic and a jar of minced garlic on hand at all times, no vampires dare come near this house!

loni Apr 18 2010

I haven’t really done anything crazy, but I am sick of running out, so we are planting our own this year!

Michelle Simons Apr 18 2010

I would knock on doors all over in my neighborhood till someone gives me my garlic! I love garlic!!!

Donna B. Apr 18 2010

It happened to me once, a few years ago, and I resorted to using garlic bulbs fom the braid that had been hanging in my kitchen since the early 90’s… they flavor wasn’t bad but the bulbs themselves were REALLY dried out so they barely had any pungency left. I had to augment with granulated garlic.

(They also had a weird texture, they never really melted into the sauce.)

I’ve learned my lesson, and I actually have a small applesauce jar that I store whole cloves in olive oil and a few rosemary springs, and a small jam jar that has minced garlic (also stored in olive oil). I also keep some fresh cloves on hand but I don’t have a storage jar so I would love to win this!

I’m going to grow some garlic this year since I have a garden space and make another braid for my kitchen (but I won’t wait 15 years to use it! LOL).

Nothing will compare to fresh garlic & i use lots & lots. The craziest thing I have done is ask a neighbor for 1 clove.

carol s. Apr 18 2010

It would be almost criminal to run out of garlic-so it really has never happened. Even if I have to use the most shriveled up cloves it is better than going without

reva skie Apr 18 2010

I haven’t been totally garlic-less. I have minced garlic in a jar in the fridge and dehydrated garlic and garlic powder in the cupboard. I think they all have their place in certain recipes and will crossover well in a pinch.

Monique Rizzo Apr 19 2010

I like Garlic Powder a lot!
Thanks for the chance.

It has only happened once. I walked to the corner store and the lady behind the counter said they dont carry garlic, That i would have to go to a grocery store for that. I was in my mid 30’s thinking ok smarty pants behind the counter i knew that i could find it at a grocery store but your a convience store NOT so convienint are they. The grocery store was seven miles away. Called hubby crying cause i was embarrased by the young girl at the corner store and told him dinner was take out and for him to bring dinner home.

Jenn S. Apr 20 2010

Not too crazy but I usually either use icky garlic powder or send hubby to the store.

hj Apr 20 2010

This happened just last week. Mid-pasta cooking. I ended up using heavy cream in the sauce to try to mask the lack of garlic taste, but it still was bland— just bland AND fatty.

I was once out of garlic for a stir fry and called my mom and had her drive me over some, since I was without a car. She totally understood and rushed some right over. I LOVE that jar!

Kathy Scott Apr 22 2010

I finally broke down and bought a jar of chopped garlic, but it is just not the same.

I went to my mothers house to borrow some, That is really bad, because she is a terrible cook, and since her stroke, she forgets when she buys things. She handed me a head of garlic, that I think was about a year old, It was completely dried out.

The one time I had discovered I ran out of garlic, I panicked and curled up into a ball and sat there for 10 hours shaking! Just kidding, I actually used the garlic butter that you get when you buy a papa johns pizza.

Kaitlyn Strycker Apr 23 2010
