Tool of the Week: Microplane Ultra Coarse Grater & Cut Resistant Glove

—Contest now closed—

A Twofer!

Dec042009

Okay, you know how you’re just whaling away on an almost-gone hunk of Parmesan with your handheld grater, and that little voice inside is just screaming “Stop now!” but no, you forgot to pick up a fresh hunk of Parm on your last trip to the store, and your spaghetti bolognese would be rendered inedible without at least a light sprinkling of cheese?

I can hear the heads nodding in recognition.

We’ve all been there.

And then, a knuckle catches on one of the nibs on the grater, you see the crimson before you feel it, and you ask yourself, When will I learn?

Another grater ain’t gonna help, honey, but we’re giving one away anyway as part of a double-barrelled Tool of the Week this time around. Since you can never have enough graters, Part One of this week’s giveaway is a Microplane Ultra Coarse Grater.

But wait, there’s more!

The real hero is Part Two: A Microplane Cut Resistant Glove to protect your delicate knuckles.

Note the fine print: “This glove is cut resistant and NOT cut proof.”

You’re already well-familiar with our in-house durability tests involving fireworks and hearses. Another part of the front print warns, “NEVER USE WITH MOVING OR SERRATED BLADES! No claim made for point-puncture resistance.”

So we’ll borrow a page from our friends over at Will It Blend? and advise you to not try anything particularly challenging with the glove at home. Leave that to us. At the very least, we’ll get some good video out of it.

In any case, the pair will make a good stocking stuffer for the klutz in your life, though that may well be you.

This is a combined value of $45, since the grater retails for $19.95 and the glove $24.95.

Win One!

One lucky BehindTheKnife.com reader will win a Microplane Ultra Coarse Grater and a Microplane Cut Resistant Glove FREE, a $45 value. Just leave a comment below by Friday December 11th, 11:59 p.m.

Besides Parmesan, the one thing I must have on my pasta is pignoli, pine nuts, which I’ve first toasted. What else can I do with pignoli besides throw them into a salad? Leave a comment about your own personal pignoli love.

mindy Dec 05 2009

just fabulous thanks

Peter Durnin Dec 05 2009

Pesto seems to be the first thing I can think of –

Anne Taylor Dec 05 2009

I remember growing up; my grandmother was teaching us how to make Christmas Pudding from Scratch and unfortunately, we ended up eating some grated finger of my brother lol (not a lot, if any, but it makes for a good story)

Pinenuts I always toast and throw on any pasta, make pesto out of them and I like to put them on flat crust home made pizza, yummmm!! (if you’ve toasted them already, put them under the cheese, if not sprinkle them on top just before the pizza is ready to come out of the oven!)

I also just eat them after they’ve been toasted with a little sea salt sprinkled on them for a quick snack!

I’ve also put them on tomatoes that I’ve topped with parmesan and put under the broiler!

Thanks

Pignoli, pine nuts are delicate enough to be added to tuna salad, hummus, even on sundaes as nuts. They are very versatile.

Very nice added to grapefruit salad. Anywhere you want a hint of nutty texture.

I like pignoli.

Thank you for asking.

Have a wonderful Christmas season!

Katrina Dec 07 2009

I never heard of pignoli, but might have to keep my eye out for it.

Amy Dec 07 2009

We eat pignoli out of hand more frequently than we do in pesto, scattered atop pasta, or in baked goods, which is to say a lot, because we have them in all of those preparations with great regularity – usually toasted, just as you to. They’re a lot better than the fingernail shreds that sometimes end up in the grated cheese, that’s for sure!

Jennifer B. Dec 07 2009

I mostly have used pine nuts in pesto, but also in with some steamed veggies a few times.

I would use them with some pasta. Make a simple sauce with garlic and olive oil and pine nuts and fresh basil. Delicious.

Jacob LaFountaine Dec 07 2009

Crushed and sprinkled over a hot muffin

rebar Dec 08 2009

Ok, so is the glove really worth it?? Couldn’t tell from the review.

My mindless/effortless fav with pine nuts is roasted pine nuts ground up and made into a chunky paste with salt and EVOO, then tossed with freshly cooked asparagus to coat – works great warm and cold.

Mitchell Dec 08 2009

love your site just found it today via theopenskyproject.com

Homero Gutierrez Dec 08 2009
